ORB Times by Market and Time Zone: When to Mark the Opening Range

8 min read
World clock showing the U.S. market open time in several time zones for opening range breakout traders

Short answer: for U.S. stocks, ETFs, and index futures, the ORB opening range starts at the 9:30 AM Eastern cash open. A 15-minute ORB uses the 9:30–9:45 AM ET range. That is 8:30 AM Central, 6:30 AM Pacific, 14:30 in the UK, and 13:30 or 14:30 UTC depending on U.S. daylight saving time.

Central Europe (CET/CEST)15:30*15:30
India (IST)19:0020:00
Singapore (SGT)21:3022:30

* Daylight saving mismatch weeks. The U.S. changes clocks on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November; the UK and EU change on the last Sunday of March and the last Sunday of October. During those gaps (about two to three weeks in March and one week in late October/early November), the U.S. open is 13:30 in the UK and 14:30 in Central Europe. Check your platform’s clock around those dates.

A 15-minute range ends 15 minutes after the start time in every zone: 9:45 ET, 8:45 CT, 14:45 UK, and so on.

Is the ORB the 9:30 Candle or the 9:45 Candle?

It is the candle covering 9:30:00–9:44:59 AM ET. The confusion comes from how platforms label bars:

  • TradingView and most web charts label a bar by its open time, so the opening range is the bar marked 9:30.
  • NinjaTrader time-stamps bars by their close time by default, so the same bar is marked 9:45.

Either way, it is the first 15 minutes of the cash session. On a 5-minute chart, the range is the first three bars.

Futures: Which Session Do You Use?

Index futures trade from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon with a short daily break, so a chart set to the full electronic session starts its day at 6:00 PM ET the evening before. If you run an ORB on that chart, the “opening range” is the overnight open, not the 9:30 ET open most ORB research refers to.

Fix it by using a regular trading hours session template (on NinjaTrader, the CME US Index Futures RTH template starts at 8:30 AM CT) or by marking 9:30–9:45 ET manually. Some futures traders also test an earlier range around the 8:30 AM ET economic data releases; treat that as a separate strategy with its own results.

Why the Exact Minute Matters

The first minutes after an open carry the heaviest volume of the morning, which is why the opening range is a meaningful reference at all (more on that in why the first 15 minutes matter). A range marked five minutes late misses part of that auction and gives different high and low levels than other traders are watching.

For choosing between a 5-, 15-, or 30-minute window once the start time is right, see 15-minute vs 30-minute ORB.

Quick Setup Checklist

  1. Confirm your chart time zone matches the one you are reading times in.
  2. Use the regular-trading-hours session for futures.
  3. Note whether your platform labels bars by open or close time.
  4. Mark the high and low when the range window closes.
  5. Around March and late October/November, double-check the U.S. open in your local time.

Once the range is marked, place risk with the ORB stop loss and profit target rules, or let the NinjaTrader ORB indicator draw the range automatically.
